Public Health Alert: Whooping Cough in Marion County

The Marion County Health Department in Fairmont, West Virginia, has received confirmation of its
third pertussis (whooping cough) case within the past month.
The health department staff are actively working to identify and notify individuals who may have
been in contact with most recent case.
Pertussis symptoms may include:
- Mild cold-like symptoms in early stages: runny nose and low-grade fever, mild occasional cough
- Persistent coughing fits
- A “whoop” sound when breathing in after coughing
- Vomiting or exhaustion after coughing
Vaccination Information:
- DTaP vaccine is recommended for children 2 months through 6 years of age
- Tdap vaccine is recommended for individuals 7 years of age and older
